The K & I Model Railroad Club is a diverse group of modelers and railroad enthusiasts whose purpose is to foster their creative interests in the model railroading hobby in a family-friendly environment. Model railroading is FUN, and membership in our club is a great way to share the fun with others. Additionally, we share our hobby by opening our club to the public on a scheduled basis throughout the year and by displaying our traveling layout at public venues in Louisville and the surrounding area.
Our membership comes from various backgrounds, ages, careers, and skill levels. Experience levels range from those who’ve been in the hobby for decades to those who’ve just entered recently. Ages range from the young (with adult supervision) to some members who are over 70 years young.
While some of our members have home layouts, the majority do not. Some are in the process of building home layouts. Since the K & I has a semi permanent sectional layout, we encourage members to help build the layout as a way of increasing individual understanding of the hobby and honing personal construction and modeling skills.
The club’s rules are formalized in our bylaws. These bylaws specify requirements for membership, dues structure, and other criteria essential to the smooth operation of our organization. We attempt to keep the bylaws to the minimum essential. (You can find membership requirements in other parts of this website.)
We are recognized by the National Model Railroad Association as a 100% Membership Club – Every member of the K & I is also a National Model Railroad Association member.
As in any organization, we have officers who provide direction to our efforts. These are:
- Superintendent: Kent Westphal
- Assistant Superintendent: Stan White
- Treasurer: Ed Brennan, MMR
- Clerk (Acting): Kent Westphal
- Clerk Emeritus: Charles B. “Mike” Shane M.D.
